Social Security Fairness Act Update

Earlier this week, the Social Security Administration (SSA) announced that it will immediately begin paying out retroactive benefits, and will increase monthly benefit payments to those whose benefits were affected by the Windfall Elimination Provision (WEP) and Government Pension Offset (GPO).

NAGE has fought for decades to repeal the harmful WEP/GOP that has negatively effected many of our members, and we are glad to see our members be made whole. Many beneficiaries will be due a retroactive payment since the WEP and GPO offset no longer applied as of January 2024. Most of the individuals effected will receive their one-time retroactive payment by the end of March, deposited into their bank account of record with the Social Security office. Many will also receive higher monthly benefits, reflected in benefit payments starting April 2025.

Union Local Tax Issues

Federal law now requires that every local union file an annual information return—Form 990, 990-EZ, or 990-N—with the IRS.

If your local fails to file under this new requirement, your local will lose its tax-exempt status.
