One of the hallmarks of NAGE, and an operating principle that sets us apart from so many other national unions, is our belief that locals know best how to meet the needs of their membership. We believe that locals should have reasonable autonomy, while still receiving expert support from the national level when needed.

To help locals reach the highest level of autonomy, we will continually add documents, tip sheets, and useful information to this section so that stewards, presidents, and other local leaders have quick and easy access to answers to common questions and concerns.

Union Local Tax Issues

Federal law now requires that every local union file an annual information return—Form 990, 990-EZ, or 990-N—with the IRS.

If your local fails to file under this new requirement, your local will lose its tax-exempt status.
